International Events

We love to travel!  But travel together; the Class encourages and supports sailors to travel internationally, mainly Europe, to improve their racecraft and gain different experiences on the international platform. Sailors/families often stay together; providing a great social experience.  With a Class van, trailer and rib you can be easily supported at international events.

Follow our Events calendar and keep up to date!

Travelling in Europe following Brexit

Since Brexit things have changed when travelling to Europe.  We have put together the attached document to help provide guidance, here.

A quick guide to some of the events that you might consider are:

Kiel Regatta

https://www.kieler-woche.de/en

Scheduled late June. This is a huge regatta rather like Cowes Week with bars and bands and lots of excitement held at Olympic venue from 1972. It’s perhaps suited to older sailors. The 420’s sail for half of the week. A lot of people camp at this event with other accommodation being expensive and quite hard to find. It’s a fun regatta, relatively easy to get to and can be a good warm up for the Worlds and Junior Euros.

420 French Nationals

Another great event to combine with a family holiday.  The venue changes each year, but there are usually good campsites for tenst, campervans or renting static homes.  Otherwise housees to rent or Airbnb, HomeAway or other websites can be used.  A fun, relaxed event with good racing and late starts!

420 Irish Nationals

Just a short hop and alwasy a friendly reception the Irish Nationals is a good summer regatta when sometimes there is less racing available in the UK.

Grand Prix de l’Armistice

https://cerclevoilebordeaux.com

Held in Carcans in October this is a fantastic regatta for experienced or novice 420 sailors. It often coincides with school half term, but not always.  It’s a long drive, but not an ordeal and has the added advantage of a regatta for Optimists too for younger siblings.  The regatta takes place on Lac d’Hourtin, very safe sailing. Forested dunes with great cycle tracks separate the lake from the Atlantic coast and a fantastic surf beach at Carcans sur Mer. Like the Carnival Regatta, it works well if a group of sailors take a coach for a full week to make the most of training before the regatta and racing within the regatta.

In the past sailors have stayed at:

http://www.camping-maubuisson.com/en/ , which is a 20min cycle or 10min drive from the sailing.

Bikes can be hired from Maubuisson https://www.funbike.fr and the sailors have really enjoyed the ride through the forest to and from sailing.

A great place for families too with cycling, surfing and the Bordeaux wine region to explore. As a family holiday it can be a good option to stay in Carcans sur Mer, near the surf beaches, a 30min cycle through the forest to Lac d’Hourtin. October is off season, so not everything is open but still a great time can be had!

Imperia Winter Regatta, Italy - December

http://www.ycim.it/index.php/regate/

This has been popular with the top of the fleet, but a long way for 4 day of sailing, usually in term time. May be possible to charter and take sails.

Gaes Christmas Regatta - Palamos Spain - December (just before Xmas)

https://www.christmasrace.org

Another one that has been popular with the top of the fleet, but also long way, but 5 days of racing, and
usually after term ends, back in time for Christmas. May also be possible to charter and take sails.
